Effective technology known since the 50's is made new and applicable for superior marine refrigeration application by the Space Program. RADIANT BARRIER is used in the astronauts space suits, and the shuttle. The temperature difference between the sun and shade side of objects in space is + or - 4000F, or 8000F. If the astronauts did not have SPACE AGE HEAT SHIELD they could not walk in space.
SPACE AGE HEAT SHIELD is SPACE CERTIFIED TECHNOLOGY.
* SPACE AGE HEAT SHIELD Marine uses are:
- Inside or outside refrigerators to lower power consumption by 30 to 50%.
- As a cabin liner to reduce the inside temperature of the boat to within a few degrees of the water temperature.
SPACE AGE HEAT SHIELD is not the usual insulation we have been familiar with the past 30 to 40 years. It is a Space Age RADIANT BARRIER. It reflects radiant heat, infrared light and heat. Convection heat does not come into play within the interior of insulation as no air is flowing. However, in a space with air flow which if enough SPACE AGE HEAT SHIELD is installed, it will lower convection loss. It does not lower conduction heat transfer and works best with 2 to 3 inches of foam.
A short explanation is in order. Infrared light is heat producing and invisible and found between visible light and microwave on the electromagnetic spectrum. Near infrared is closest to visible light and far or deep infrared is close to microwave. Far infrared waves are thermal and cause increased molecular vibration activity. In other words, infrared radiation is heat.
Recent testing showed that 1 inch of SPACE AGE HEAT SHIELD plus 1.5 inches of polystyrene foam is equivalent to almost 7 inches of urethane foam. By using 3 inches of foam and one inch of SPACE AGE HEAT SHIELD tests showed the combination to be equivalent to 9 inches of urethane foam. The end result of these tests show that 1 inch of SPACE AGE HEAT SHIELD to be equal to 5 to 6 inches of urethane foam. The further away heat shield is installed from the cold source the greater the equivalent value of urethane foam it represents.
Of the three types of heat transferred through a wall, hull, bulkhead or other substance radiant heat makes up 64.5 %, convection 29.0 %, and conduction 6.5 %. If the radiant heat can be reduced significantly, the heat gain into a refrigerator will be much less using a fraction of the space taken up by conventional marine foam insulation. Multiple layers of SPACE AGE HEAT SHIELD make a tremendous difference in the heat flow through any substance, even a vacuum. See MODIFYING and CONTROLLING HEAT FLOW by engineers at Westinghouse Electric Co. {Heat flow link is easier read at 50% reduction. Same for Spaces in next paragraph}
Reflective spaces are important in understanding heat transfer across building spaces, whether in houses or boats. The charts in REFLECTIVE SPACES show that radiation is the major component of heat transfer, 50 to 93%. Cutting radiation down is the most important thing that can be done in lessening the heat gain into a refrigerator or living area. One sheet of Heat Shield has a reflectivity of 97% or it absorbs radiation at only 3%. Additional layers of heat shield separated by a small air space works even better. One inch of our multi layered Space Age Heat Shield is equivalent to 5 to 6 inches of urethane foam insulation depending on the direction of the radiation heat flow and how it is installed.
BOAT SHOWS
Visit us in the Fourwinds Enterprises, Inc. booth #613 in with Latitudes and Attitudes magazine booth in February, 2008 at at the Miami Strictly Sail Boat Show at Bay Side in downtown Miami, FL. Bring us your most difficult questions. We will answer them, and recommend what you should use to solve the problems.
If having the best electrical system powered by alternate energy, (wind, water, and solar) is of interest to you or your friends, we give seminars boat shows. Learn about A SIMPLER SOLUTION to configuring your battery system, and how to not run your engine except going to and from an anchorage. How to make your refrigeration system more efficient and use less amp hours per day. Check the boat show program for seminar locations.
In November , 2007 we will be in ST. PETERSBURG, FL Strictly Sail Boat Show. Updated 04-14-06
Yes, infrared heat energy makes a big difference in refrigeration applications. PLEASE SEE HOW TO INSTALL OUR PRODUCT
New, we now have a white fiberglass interior surface panel, .040 inches thick, that installs on the insulation to restore the fiberglass interior to your box. It is optional at $79 for a 4' x 7' sheet. If shipped with the Heat Shield there is no additional freight cost.
Our line of Heat Shield refrigerator liners and cabin liners are uniquely designed so instead of slowing down heat transfer, they actually BLOCK the transfer of RADIANT heat energy. A typical 9 cu. ft. foam insulated boat Refrigerator gains 3735 Btu/24 hr, The same box insulated with 1" Heat Shield gains less than 1800 Btu /24 hr. A decrease in Btu gain of 51%. This corresponds to one user's experience where SPACE AGE HEAT SHIELD reduced his 12 VDC refrigeration system from 110 AH/D to 55 AH/D.
ASTM insulation testing will not show the true value of HEAT SHIELD. (1940's government war era testing of Y2K space age products need updating.) We really care "HOW LONG DOES ICE LAST IN YOUR BOX WITH OUR INSULATION INSTALLED".
Tests by an authority in the field measurement science, test procedures, and calibration show our 1" refrigeration liner to be equal to or better than 1" Vacuum panels at 1/10 the cost. NEW PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES allow the refrigeration liner to be manufactured in one half the thickness (1/2") with equivalent insulating properties. Problems with vacuum panels are: 1) cost. 2) WHEN and/or IF, the vacuum leaks, you have a very expensive empty panel. 3) How will you get these big fixed panels into your box? Will you cut the top out of your teak cabinetry to install them? Or will you put in so many small panels that heat leaks everywhere. SPACE AGE HEAT SHIELD ships via UPS for $27.00 to $44.00 in the 48 states depending on your zone. Vacuum panels are packed up and shipped at costs of about $250.00 to keep them from breaking or being punctured. Puncture SPACE AGE HEAT SHIELD panel and it still works.
